Ghent (Dutch: Gent [ɣɛnt] ⓘ; French: Gand [ɡɑ̃] ⓘ; historically known as Gaunt in English) is a city and a municipality in the Flemish Region of Belgium. It is the capital and largest city of the East Flanders province, and the third largest in the country, after Brussels and Antwerp.
It is a port and university city.
The city originally started as a settlement at the confluence of the Rivers Scheldt and Leie and in the Late Middle Ages became one of the largest and richest cities of northern Europe, with some 50,000 people in 1300. After the late 16th century Ghent became a less important city, resulting in an extremely well-preserved historic centre, that now makes Ghent an important destination of tourism.
The municipality comprises the city of Ghent proper and the surrounding suburbs of Afsnee, Desteldonk, Drongen, Gentbrugge, Ledeberg, Mariakerke, Mendonk, Oostakker, Sint-Amandsberg, Sint-Denijs-Westrem, Sint-Kruis-Winkel, Wondelgem and Zwijnaarde. I visited Brugge in 1977 when I was stationed in Germany. Sure looks different but I recognized many of the sights you walked by. I took a boat tour also while there. The only bad thing about Brugge was that I ate some smoked eel at a restaurant on the main plaza and got extremely ill that night and had to have a doctor come to the hotel room and pump my backside full of cement (well, it felt like it) and that all stopped. The next morning I left for Ghent.
Wow!😥 It's a long time ago, but you'll never forget it.😱 If there were no such bad memories, Bruges is a place I would really like to visit again.😉 Thanks for watching and have a wonderful week!🥰
